I’m Talking was dedicated to exploring post-disco R&B and funk-based dance music. It was a style that had few practitioners in Australia during the early 80’s when blokey pub rock dominated the live music scene. With their mix of backgrounds and genders I’m Talking stood out as something different. Their strength came from their diversity although that probably also contributed to their short life span of a little less than four years. Formed in 1983 by guitarist Robert Goodge, bassist Barbara Hogarth and saxophonist Ian Cox, all of whom had come from the Melbourne post-punk independent scene, and the underground band Essendon Airport in particular, the trio decided to head in a more commercial direction embracing dance/pop . They enlisted like minds in keyboardist Stephen Charlesworth and drummer Cameron Newman and, with the powerful presence of vocalists Kate and Zan and a compelling set of original tunes, soon found themselves live favourites on Melbourne and Sydney's inner-city club circuit.
The band's only album, Bear Witness was produced in 1987 by Fred Maher (Scritti Politti, Lou Reed, Material) and Martyn Webster (ABC, Propaganda). It attained gold status on the ARIA chart and led to the band signing a contract with UK label London records. The album featured the hits ‘Do You Wanna Be’ and ‘Holy Word’ and their stunning version of Rose Royce’s 1978 classic ‘Love Don’t Live Here Anymore'. In 2010, Bear Witness was included in The 100 Best Australian Albums publication.
